India and China were among the first countries to cultivate tea. Green tea has been part of the Asian diet for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence reveal tea leaves were being steeped in boiling water hundreds of thousands of years ago. People still enjoy tea the same way today.

Today we know green tea contains polyphenols. Polyphenols are very potent antioxidants. Findings show polyphenols also protect against certain cancers. The antioxidants found in green tea have show to be very beneficial to heart health. It helps prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) or bad cholesterol.

Green tea has been found to help lower the levels of bad cholesterol.

Green tea contains four primary polyphenols. These four primary polyphenols are known as catechins. Catechins are powerful antioxidants. They are known to be very beneficial to one's health. Studies have shown catechins help slow aging and help fight viruses.

Studies of health and illness in certain populations have shown lower rates of several types of cancer among the populations of China and Japan. Drinking green tea is part of the daily culture in these countries. These epidemiological studies are showing green tea is anticarcinogenic.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules and molecule fragments that can harm the body at cellular levels. This leaves the body at risk to heart disease, cancer and other degenerative diseases. Catechins that are in green tea have been found to destroy free radicals in clinical studies. Controlled studies have revealed green tea extract contain the polyphenol EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). EGCG has shown to inhibit urokinase (required for tumor formation). Therefore it has been found to prevent tumor formation. EGCG cause certain cancer cells to be in circumstances where they must die or be killed. This process is called apoptosis. Apoptosis is a programmed cell death.

The antioxidant EGCG found in green tea is very powerful. It is twice as beneficial as resveratrol found in red wine. EGCG has been found to be at least 100 times more effective than vitamin C at protecting cells and DNA. It is 25 times more effective than vitamin E at protecting cells and DNA from damage believed to be linked to heart disease, cancer, and other very serious diseases.
